49ers Reportedly Signing A Former Super Bowl Champion

The San Francisco 49ers were thought to be the favorites to win the Super Bowl for quite some time, but their championship hopes took a sizable hit on Monday when they got rolled by the Baltimore Ravens, 33-19.

It was a terrible night for quarterback Brock Purdy, who was formerly the MVP frontrunner, as he threw four interceptions and zero touchdown passes, while the 49ers had trouble preventing Ravens QB Lamar Jackson from making big plays at crucial times.

In an attempt to bolster their defense a bit, San Francisco reportedly signed defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day on Tuesday, per Jason McCourty via Dov Kleiman.

Joseph-Day was a sixth-round draft pick in 2018 by the Los Angeles Rams after five seasons at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and he was inactive throughout his rookie season as the Rams got to the Super Bowl, only to lose to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

But he became a starter the following year, and despite suffering a torn pectoral muscle during the 2021 season, he returned for the Super Bowl, where L.A. defeated the Cincinnati Bengals to win it all.

Joseph-Day has spent this season and last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, and before the struggling Chargers cut him last week, he put up 3.0 sacks and 11 quarterback hits in 14 games this year.

The Niners have seemingly gone all-in on defense this year — they traded for former Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young two months ago, and they also acquired Randy Gregory earlier in February from the Denver Broncos.

During the offseason, they also signed defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who has 7.0 sacks, 14 QB hits, and eight tackles for loss in 14 games this year.
