After a promising 2022 NFL season, which resulted in a playoff berth and taking the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to the limit in an epic postseason showdown, quarterback Trevor Lawrence began to live up to the expectations that he had coming into the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2021.
Heading into the 2023 campaign, the Jaguars were a team everyone expected to take another leap, with Lawrence starting to come into his own as one of the best quarterbacks in the league while the franchise put some talented players around him.
Unfortunately for Lawrence, the Houston Texans had a breakout year in 2023, with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud proving to be a superstar in the making and leading the team to an AFC South division title and an upset win over the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the playoffs.
The Jaguars missed the playoffs entirely in 2023, which was a very disappointing result for a team that was thought to be on the rise with a budding superstar under center.
Lawrence received a lot of criticism for not being able to lead the team back to the postseason last year, but Ryan Michael argues that Lawrence has been the best quarterback in the league over the last two seasons.
This is a pretty bold statement to make, given all the talent at the quarterback position around the league and the fact that many believe Lawrence hasn’t lived up to the expectations he had coming into the NFL, where he was getting comparisons to Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
Only time will tell what Lawrence will become and if he can live up to the hype, but he’s still got time to prove his doubters wrong while potentially turning the Jaguars into a title contender in the AFC.
