The San Francisco 49ers will continue their “Quest For Six” on Sunday when they host the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game.

It will be their fourth appearance in the NFC title game over the last five seasons, but there has been some concern lately because of a shoulder injury wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered in the previous round versus the Green Bay Packers.

He was forced to leave that game in the first half, but on Wednesday, Omar Ruiz reported that Samuel was seen doing work at practice and that “any discomfort wasn’t apparent.”

In 15 regular-season games, Samuel put up 892 receiving yards and 12 total touchdowns from scrimmage, but his impact may go beyond those numbers.

When he missed two games, the Niners struggled offensively, scoring only 17 points apiece and losing both contests.

The difference in their offensive production with and without Samuel has been stark.

He not only provides San Francisco with a reliable pass-catching playmaker, but he can also line up as a running back on occasion, and he helps draw defensive attention away from fellow wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and All-Pro tight end George Kittle.

Normally, their offense starts with running back Christian McCaffrey, who is the favorite to win the Offensive Player of the Year award, but Detroit’s rushing defense is very strong, so their passing game will need to be very productive, and without Samuel, it would be hard-pressed to do so.

The last time Samuel played against the Lions, back in Week 1 of the 2021 season, he went off for nine catches, 189 yards, and one touchdown.
