Late last season and early this season, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was one of the NFL’s hottest young players, and he looked to have stardom written all over him.
The Jaguars had an 8-3 record, and it looked like perhaps they were dark-horse contenders to reach the Super Bowl, especially given how wide-open the AFC is this season.
But they now have a four-game losing streak, and Lawrence has fallen back down to earth.
Lawrence will soon be due for a contract extension, and on his podcast, Bill Simmons questioned whether it would be wise for Jacksonville to pay him as much as $250 million.
In fact, Simmons compared the situation to that of NBA star Bradley Beal, who got an extension from the Washington Wizards even though the Wizards were stuck in mediocrity.
During the Jaguars’ current four-game losing streak, Lawrence has thrown seven touchdown passes and five interceptions, and on Sunday, he looked dismal.
He threw two interceptions against one touchdown pass and completed just 17 of 29 pass attempts as Jacksonville lost 30-12 to a mediocre Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that is fighting for a playoff spot.
At one point, Jacksonville trailed 30-0, and after putting his team on the board late in the third quarter, Lawrence sat out the fourth quarter as C.J. Beathard took over the offense.
Lawrence was diagnosed with an AC joint injury in his right shoulder, and his availability for this weekend’s game versus the Carolina Panthers is in doubt.
If he plays and plays well these final two weeks of the regular season, perhaps he can prove that he does deserve a big contract extension after all.
