The Houston Texans were one of the NFL’s biggest surprises this season, and all of a sudden, their immediate future looks very bright.
They fast-tracked their success by winning 10 regular-season games, earning them a trip to the playoffs, where they blasted the Cleveland Browns and advanced to the divisional round.
They did all that despite being picked by most to only marginally improve on last season’s 3-13-1 finish.
Houston’s success led to offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik being a hot commodity around the NFL as far as a head coaching candidate, but per Albert Breer, he will be sticking around for at least one more year on a new deal.
Under Slowik’s leadership, the Texans were seventh in passing yards this season, and they also committed the fewest turnovers of any team in the NFL.
Plenty of credit has also gone to rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who exceeded the expectations of many and greatly outplayed Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young, who was taken one pick ahead of him in the draft at No. 1.
Stroud threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns, and against Cleveland in the playoffs, he went 16 of 21 for 274 yards and three touchdowns.
Houston is far from a one-man team offensively — this year saw the emergence of Nico Collins and rookie Tank Dell as legitimate threats at wide receiver, and both could only get better over the next couple of years.
If they improve their defense and running game this offseason, they will be even more of a handful than they were this past year.
