San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has become one of sports’ greatest Cinderella stories, as he went from the last player chosen in the 2022 draft to the 49ers’ starting signal-caller in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
There, he experienced the heartbreak of a lifetime by losing the big game to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, 25-22.
San Francisco led 10-0 at one point, but they made a few key mistakes that likely cost them the world championship.
While Purdy wasn’t responsible for any of their big miscues, he does have regrets about his personal play, per 95.7 The Game.
“Second half, I just wish we would’ve been on with the opportunities that we had, with their turnovers, or our defense getting stops,” Purdy said.
To be clear, Purdy didn’t exactly play poorly — while he didn’t have his typical efficient game, he didn’t throw any interceptions and only got sacked once.
The Niners had trouble converting on third downs, but Purdy did come through in enough third-down situations to give them a chance to win.
In the end, their defense was more to blame, as was the muffed punt in the third quarter that almost practically handed the Chiefs the touchdown that put them ahead, 13-10.
A strong argument could be made that as presently constituted, San Francisco has the best roster in the NFL, and perhaps Purdy will only refine his game moving forward.
While many still accuse him of being no better than an average or decent QB, he appears to be the real deal, especially after he led his team to two come-from-behind wins in the playoffs to reach the Super Bowl.
The 49ers are built to win now, and Sunday’s loss can either devastate or motivate them.
