After years of suffering through mediocrity, the Washington Commanders appear to be on the precipice of establishing the foundation for years of winning.
They will have the No. 2 pick in next week’s NFL Draft, and they’re expected to take a quarterback who could be a franchise cornerstone and perhaps even a future Hall of Famer.
Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye are expected to be available at No. 2, as will J.J. McCarthy from the University of Michigan.
Per Adam Schefter, McCarthy will meet with Washington this week.
Weeks ago, McCarthy was thought to be a tier below the top-three QBs in this draft, but now, his stock has considerably risen since the NFL Scouting Combine.
He led the University of Michigan to a win in the College Football Playoff National Championship game over the University of Washington, and he threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns throughout the season.
Critics say his numbers aren’t impressive at all, but Michigan ran the football a lot, leading to fewer opportunities for him to show his passing ability.
One has to expect the Commanders to do their due diligence in evaluating all available QBs to ensure they pick the one who will turn them into a winner for the next decade-plus.
In the last 30 years, they have made the playoffs just six times, and they haven’t won in the playoffs since the 2005 season.
But with new ownership in place and plenty of salary cap space moving forward, the opportunity is there for the Commanders to transform themselves in a short amount of time.
