A new era has begun for the Los Angeles Chargers after they hired a legitimate, respected head coach in Jim Harbaugh and made some intriguing draft choices.

Not that many people are expecting them to do a whole lot right away this coming season, but one analyst feels they could be relatively competitive.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky implied while on “The Dan Patrick Show” that the Chargers will be fighting for a playoff spot late this coming season, and he also likes the vision that seems to be taking shape for them.

At every stop in both the NCAA and NFL, Harbaugh has believed in playing smash-mouth football and building from the offensive line out, and Los Angeles could have the beginnings of a monstrous offensive line.

They already had a stud at left tackle in Rashawn Slater, and with the No. 5 pick in last month’s draft, they took Joe Alt, an offensive tackle from Notre Dame who stands 6-foot-8 and weighs over 320 pounds.

As Orlovsky mentioned, a great offensive line makes a team’s quarterback and skill players seem even better by providing outstanding protection, and L.A. already has a very good or even great QB in Justin Herbert.

They brought in two solid running backs in Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, and Orlovsky mentioned Ladd McConkey, a wide receiver they took in the second round of this year’s draft, as someone who has potential.

They lost their top two wideouts — Keenan Allen and Mike Williams — in free agency this offseason, which means both McConkey and Quentin Johnston, a first-round pick last year, will need to produce.

But at the very least, the Chargers now have outstanding leadership on the sideline and an identity that other teams will have to deal with.
