While just about everyone agrees that quarterback Caleb Williams will be the first player chosen in this month’s NFL Draft, there is some debate about who the second-best QB in the draft class is.
Is it Jayden Daniels, the dual-threat signal-caller from LSU, or could it be Drake Maye of the University of North Carolina?
Or could it possibly even be J.J. McCarthy, the University of Michigan QB and newly minted national champion whose stock has risen lately?
NFL draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic said the second-best QB in this year’s draft is Maye, but he also understands how some would think it is Daniels, per JP Finlay.
Maye threw for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, and he had 4,321 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns in 2022.
While he has scored 16 touchdowns on the ground over the last two years, some feel he isn’t a true dual-threat QB, but at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, he has very good size to excel at the next level.
Daniels, meanwhile, posted 3,812 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, 1,134 rushing yards, and 10 rushing touchdowns in 2023 for the LSU Tigers.
The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, which will give them the opportunity to select either Maye or Daniels, or even McCarthy if they happen to be enamored enough with the Wolverines QB.
With their new ownership in place, they could end up with a man who will turn them into a winning franchise for many years to come and get them back to the upper realm they inhabited for much of the 1980s and early 1990s.
