From the mid-2000s through the end of the 2010s, Drew Brees was consistently one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, and he put up numbers on the regular that very few players have ever been able to match.
He retired in 2020 with 13 Pro Bowl selections, two Offensive Player of the Year awards, a Super Bowl championship, and numerous other accomplishments.
Per Nick Underhill, Brees said that if his throwing arm had let him, he would’ve played another three seasons, but he instead retired after the 2020 season.
Brees came into the NFL in 2001 as a second-round draft pick, and in 2004, he made his first Pro Bowl by throwing for 3,159 yards and 27 touchdowns.
It turned out he was just scratching the surface of his potential.
He would lead the league in passing yards a whopping seven times, and he went over the 5,000-yard mark in five seasons, which is more than anyone else in history.
Brees also set the single-season record for highest completion percentage in 2018, and he once threw a touchdown pass in 54 consecutive games, which is another NFL record.
Even toward the end, he was still a very viable quarterback as he entered his early 40s, and he has been one of a few pro athletes who in recent years have bent the rules of longevity.
