Under Bill Belichick for over two decades, defense was the staple in New England.
Even when they had Tom Brady, the team’s calling card was defense.
Now, head coach Jerod Mayo will look to continue that ideology.
However, among the team’s eight draft picks in the NFL Draft, the team drafted just one defender.
Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf appeared on “Up & Adams” recently to chat about that being his biggest regret of the draft.
“I’m really excited about what the future holds. My one regret so far for this offseason particularly with the draft is we had eight draft picks. We only drafted one defensive player,” Wolf stated.
Wolf did go on to say that he feels good about the players that they have in-house.
New England has a lot of players on their roster that spent multiple years playing under former head coach Bill Belichick.
Matthew Judon is the star along the line.
Veterans like Christian Barmore, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Davon Godchaux are solid role players too.
Linebackers Ja’Whaun Bentley and Jahlani Tavai have proven to be difference-makers in the middle of the defense, which is exactly where Mayo’s expertise lies.
Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers are the talented playmakers on the backend.
This isn’t a star-studded defense like the one in San Francisco with the 49ers or New York with the Jets.
But, they are a solid group that has plenty of experience playing together.
There is a reason why the Pats drafted just one defender this year.
