Every single year, superstar quarterbacks set the bar higher and higher regarding long-term contract extensions, with each player at the position wanting to be the highest-paid, which can make the negotiation process difficult and drawn out.
However, whenever a team gets a franchise quarterback that proves their worth to the team, that player tends to get paid one way or another, as it is no easy task to land these kinds of players, so when they get them, they want to hold onto them.
A perfect example of this is the Los Angeles Chargers with superstar Justin Herbert, who recently signed a massive deal with the team, even though he hasn’t had any success in the NFL playoffs and is coming off a forgettable season that resulted in head coach Brandon Staley getting fired during the season and Jim Harbaugh getting hired during this offseason.
With Herbert setting the bar high as many expected he would, as he will be paid over $52 million annually by the struggling franchise, Tau Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins has some negotiating leverage, according to Michael Lombardi via “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“If you’re Tua, Justin Herbert got paid $52.5 million, so I’m sure [Tua’s agent] is saying, ‘my guy’s been to the playoffs… he’s got these numbers, he should make this,'” Lombardi said (via FinsXtra).
Although there are plenty of questions about Tagovailoa’s long-term health as he’s already battled some severe injuries during his football career, there’s no question he’s among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL right now and more than deserving of a lucrative long-term extension.
However, a deal has yet to come to fruition, which means there could be some difficulty seeing eye-to-eye, making this an interesting situation moving forward for Miami.
