After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers found out that superstar quarterback Tom Brady was going to retire from the NFL, the team was forced into the difficult situation of replacing arguably the greatest player ever to play the position in league history.
Obviously, there’s no way to replace Brady, as the next man up will certainly be a downgrade, but the Buccaneers had to do their best and did an admirable job seeing that former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield still had something left in the tank.
The Buccaneers decided to bring in Mayfield on a one-year contract and deal with the results, which turned out to be much better than expected, as he led the team to a division title, a playoff berth, and a playoff win before being eliminated by the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round.
Due to Mayfield’s impressive season and postseason in Tampa Bay, former NFL quarterback Trent Green believes he should be in contention for Comeback Player of the Year, via NFL on CBS.
Even though Green points out that Mayfield should receive recognition for his performance this season, there’s likely a low chance he’s beating out Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills after the latter returned to the field after what he went through last year in such a public way.
However, Mayfield won’t be left empty-handed as it seems the Buccaneers fully intend to re-sign the veteran quarterback during the offseason, and the team might be willing to make it a long-term lucrative contract, which is a big win for the 28-year-old.
