The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an 8-7 record going into Week 16, and they’re seemingly on the verge of claiming not only a playoff spot but the NFC South title.
They have won four games in a row, and they have been led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is seemingly going through a renaissance this season.
The former No. 1 overall pick has had an excellent season, and former NFL tight end Greg Olsen said on the NFL on Fox Podcast that Mayfield has been the engine of their offense and feels he deserves more credit.
When Mayfield entered the league in the 2018 season with the Cleveland Browns, he was expected to become a superstar and possibly one of the better quarterbacks in recent history.
He had his moments in his first few seasons, such as when he led the Browns to just their second playoff appearance and first playoff win since the mid-1990s during the 2020 season.
But by and large, he couldn’t put it all together, and Cleveland virtually forced him out during the 2022 offseason.
He spent the 2022 campaign with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, and afterward, it looked like he was on the verge of being out of the league.
But the Buccaneers took a flyer on him after Tom Brady retired, and Mayfield has blossomed.
Through 15 games, he has thrown for 3,598 yards and 26 touchdowns, and during the Bucs’ current winning streak, he has nine touchdown passes and just one interception.
The team will face the New Orleans Saints, who are 7-8, on Sunday in a game that will have huge playoff implications for both squads, and another strong performance from Mayfield would reinforce the notion that he has finally figured it out.
