Fraser-McGurk goes berserk: Redbacks rising star smashes fastest ton EVER to obliterate Tassie bowlers

Jake Fraser-McGurk blasted his way into cricket’s history books by breaking the world record for the fastest ever List A hundred with an astonishing ton in just 29 balls for South Australia against Tasmania on Sunday.

The young opener obliterated the Tasmanian attack to better the mark of 31 deliveries set by South African legend AB de Villiers against the West Indies in 2015.

Fraser-McGurk was dismissed by off-spinner Beau Webster in just the 12th over of the innings for 125 from 38 deliveries, finishing with 10 fours and 13 sixes.

He hit three sixes from the first full over he faced and after racking up his half-century in just 18 balls, an Australian record, he needed just 11 more deliveries to reach triple figures.

The 21-year-old had never scored a century in the professional ranks with the Melbourne product switching to SA in the off-season to get more game time.

Left-arm seamer Sam Rainbird went for 32 as Fraser-McGurk took him down for four sixes and two fours, putting fans in danger at Karen Rolton Oval.

His ton came up in just the ninth over of the match and his opening stand with Henry Hunt totalled 172 from just 11.4 overs.

His superb hitting has put the Redbacks within striking distance of victory in reply to Tasmania’s huge total of 9-435 after Jordan Silk scored his maiden Marsh Cup century to propel the visitors to the highest total in Australian domestic one-day history.

With 14 overs remaining, SA were 3-319 with Nathan McSweeney 50 not out and Jake Lehmann on 27.

Hunt made 51 off 47 while Daniel Drew added 52 off 51 for the hosts.

Silk (116) and opener Caleb Jewell (90) led the way for the visitors after they were sent in to bat.

When Webster slapped Brendan Doggett over square leg and into the car park for six, the Tasmanians passed their previous best score of 1-398 in the 46th over.

Bradley Hope cut the ball past third man for four with two overs remaining to break the all-time record of 7-420, set by South Australia against the Cricket Australia XI in 2016.

Silk helped the Tigers steady after the loss of openers Jewell and Jake Weatherald (35) in the space of two overs in the morning.

The 31-year-old brought his half-century up with a half-volley to cover in the 33rd over.

On a day of carnage, Silk showed his maturity by slowing himself down in the nervous 90s, before swatting Nathan McAndrew (1-81) to deep point and bringing up his century.

Silk went into party mode once he reached triple figures, giving Henry Thornton nightmares as he hit him for two fours and a six in the space of four deliveries.

His innings finally came to an end in the 45th over, when he attempted to slog McAndrew for his 15th boundary of the innings but was caught by Ben Manenti at deep midwicket.

Even the South Australian locals had to applaud as Silk left the pitch, having made the first hundred of his 57-game List A career.

Jewell was important early, setting the tone for a day of bloodshed by smacking Brendan Doggett (3-86) for four on three occasions in the first over.

He looked to be closing in on a fourth List A century before being caught by Doggett on the boundary rope at deep square leg in the 15th over.

The South Australians saved face by ripping through the tail but the damage had been done.

The huge total came after the Tigers dropped their first two matches of the summer to sit last on the Marsh Cup table.
