Defensive end Montez Sweat is one of the better pass rushers in the NFL, and at age 27, he may still have some room for improvement.
Even though this season isn’t over yet, he has already posted career-highs of 12.5 sacks and 51 tackles (34 solo), and he also has 24 quarterback hits and 13 tackles for loss.
Just hours before the trade deadline, the Washington Commanders dealt Sweat to the Chicago Bears, and with him in the lineup, the Bears have won three of six games.
This season, he’s leading both teams in sacks, per Pro Football Focus, despite having played only eight games for Washington and six games for Chicago.
Sweat was the No. 26 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he had 7.0 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and nine tackles for loss as a rookie.
The following year, he registered 9.0 sacks, 20 QB hits, and 12 tackles for loss, as well as a pick-six, as he helped Washington to a playoff appearance.
It was only their sixth playoff appearance since the early 1990s, but there is some new hope now that they’re under the new ownership of billionaire Josh Harris and NBA legend Magic Johnson.
The controversial and dismal reign of former owner Daniel Snyder is over, and the Commanders may have their quarterback of the future in Sam Howell.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 5-9 and very close to being eliminated from playoff contention, but there is some hope for their immediate future.
They will likely have two of the top picks in next April’s draft, and they may even have an opportunity to draft University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams.
