The Los Angeles Chargers, a franchise that has been regarded as a second-rate organization for many years, took a big step toward respectability on Wednesday when they reportedly hired Jim Harbaugh to be their next head coach.

Harbaugh led the University of Michigan Wolverines to a win in the College Football Playoff National Championship earlier this month, and he has a history of turning things around and winning just about everywhere he has gone.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out how thanks to the Harbaugh hire, the AFC West is now loaded with notable coaches.

Harbaugh last coached in the NFL about a decade ago when he took over the San Francisco 49ers before the 2011 season.

At the time, the 49ers were going through a difficult rebuilding period, but they went from six wins in 2010 to a 13-3 record and an NFC Championship Game appearance in Harbaugh’s first season with them, and the following year, they made it to the Super Bowl.

Andy Reid is still the main man for the Kansas City Chiefs, and he has now guided them to six straight AFC title game appearances, not to mention two world championships.

While the Denver Broncos had another disappointing season, they have a very capable coach in Sean Payton, who once guided Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints to the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders are going with Antonio Pierce, who replaced the deposed Josh McDaniels as interim head coach at midseason and instantly commanded love and respect from his players.
