When the New England Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick after he had been their head coach for 24 seasons, it also left them without a general manager, as Belichick also essentially held that role.
Since then, Eliot Wolf, their director of scouting, has been acting as their general manager, and he presided over their draft process in recent weeks.
According to Dan Graziano, Wolf could very well end up landing the Patriots’ official general manager role, but they also have external candidates to interview, including some who are people of color in order to satisfy the Rooney Rule, per NFL on ESPN.
Per Adam Schefter, one external candidate New England reportedly met with is Brandon Hunt, who is the director of scouting for the Philadelphia Eagles.
With Wolf acting as New England’s general manager, they drafted University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3 in last month’s draft, and he could very well be their true franchise QB for the next 10-15 years.
Overall, they went offense with each of their first five picks, which included Ja’Lynn Polk, a wide receiver from the University of Washington, and offensive linemen Caedan Wallace and Layden Robinson.
After going 4-13 last season, their worst finish since 1992, the Patriots have many holes to fill, and their fans, who have gotten so accustomed to success over the last 20 years or so, will have to simply be patient.
Deciding on a full-time general manager will be a big step toward ensuring success during that process, as it will make sure they not only have the right man but also solidify their roster-building philosophy.
