As was the case a year ago, the Chicago Bears have received the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and they will have to decide what to do with it.
In 2023, they traded that draft pick to the Carolina Panthers for wide receiver D.J. Moore and four draft picks, one of which is that No. 1 selection this year.
Chicago has to decide whether to trade the No. 1 pick once again or to use it on a quarterback and instead trade incumbent Justin Fields.
While Mel Kiper Jr. feels they can get a first-round pick in return for Fields, Benjamin Allbright says the best they could do is receive two second-round picks and one late-round pick for the third-year QB.
Fields, the No. 11 pick in the 2021 draft, looked promising while at Ohio State, but in three pro seasons, he has failed to show any real growth or improvement.
He finished 2023 with a 61.4 percent completion rate and only 2,562 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns in 13 games.
The 24-year-old clearly isn’t a long-term solution for the long-suffering Bears, and it seems it would be wise for them to cut their losses and try out a different prospect under center.
The No. 1 pick in this year’s draft is expected to be Caleb Williams of the University of Southern California, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2022, but if the Bears aren’t impressed with his intangibles, they would have other options.
