Jerry Jones Responds To Mike McCarthy Narrative

Despite some occasional inconsistency and a few tough losses to marquee teams, the Dallas Cowboys have wrapped up the second seed in the NFC with a 12-5 record.

While the rival San Francisco 49ers are the clear favorites to win the NFC, as well as to win the Super Bowl, the Cowboys clearly appear to have the best chance of preventing them from playing in the Las Vegas area for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February.

Still, the specter of past playoff disappointments hangs over the franchise, and if it doesn’t at least make it to the NFC Championship Game, fans could end up asking for big changes to be made.

One change some may ask for is the dismissal of head coach Mike McCarthy, but owner Jerry Jones seemed to offer some public support for him, per Jon Machota.

“I just think his record speaks for itself,” Jones said. “I think of what he’s done and that we’ve put ourselves in this position over these last three years, I think that does speak for itself. We’ve got a lot of football left and no small part thanks to Mike.”

McCarthy has a long history in the NFL, going back to 2000 when he began as the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator.

Dallas hired him for the 2020 season, partly because of his success with the Green Bay Packers, who he guided to a world championship during the 2010 season.

McCarthy’s critics will point to the fact that his Cowboys have exited early in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons despite winning 12 games both years.

To make matters worse, both playoff losses came at the hands of the 49ers.

A strong argument could be made that this is the best roster the Cowboys have had since they last won the Super Bowl in the 1995 season, even without star cornerback Trevon Diggs, who was lost early in the season due to a knee injury.

But for a franchise that has brazenly embraced its nickname of “America’s Team,” nothing other than a Super Bowl win will cut it, especially with all the talent they possess.
