The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have some connections heading into the Super Bowl next weekend, which will be held on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
One of those connections is defensive end Charles Omenihu, who currently plays for the Chiefs but used to play for the 49ers.
During the 2019 NFL Draft, Omenihu was selected No. 161 overall by the Houston Texans but didn’t spend much time with the team that drafted him, as he was traded to San Francisco for a sixth-round pick in November of 2021.
After spending the 2022 NFL season with the 49ers, Omenihu signed a two-year deal with the Chiefs and finished his first regular season with the team with a career-high 7.0 sacks.
Unfortunately for Omenihu, he suffered a torn ACL and has been ruled out for the showdown with his former team in the Super Bowl.
A 49ers fan took a shot at Omenihu for leaving San Francisco for Kansas City, prompting the 26-year-old’s response on Twitter.
“Why would I have done that and they didn’t want to pay me?” he tweeted in response to a fan saying he should have stayed with the 49ers.
Omenihu went down with the season-ending knee injury in the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, which paved the way for the Chiefs to reach the Super Bowl for a second straight year.
Although he tried to stay in San Francisco, Omenihu clearly took his game to another level while with the Chiefs and now has a chance to win his first ring in the NFL.
Unfortunately for Kansas City, Omenihu’s presence will be missed as they try to contain Brock Purdy and the potent 49ers offense.
