Ever since the New England Patriots ended the 2023 NFL season with a disappointing record of 4-13, finishing dead last in the AFC East division standings without a playoff berth, the consensus was drastic changes were on the horizon for the storied franchise.
All season long, legendary head coach Bill Belichick was rumored to be on the hot seat in New England, with longtime team owner Robert Kraft seriously considering parting ways with him after 24 seasons with the Patriots.
Ultimately, that rumor turned out to be true, as the Patriots didn’t waste too much time making their decision, as they fired Belichick not long after the season was officially over for New England.
After parting ways with Belichick after more than two decades, the Patriots brought in former player Jerod Mayo to be the new head coach, which was a surprising move.
Then the team put all of its efforts into figuring out who would be the best quarterback prospect at No. 3 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, which turned out to be Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina.
With the dust somewhat settling on the offseason, the Patriots reportedly have the most cap space available post-June 1, according to uSTADIUM.
Even though the Patriots have a ton of cap space moving forward, New England isn’t a team known for spending money on free agents, but there’s a chance that changes in the post-Belichick era.
It’ll be interesting to see how things change in New England moving forward and whether the team is willing to spend more to regain its status as a force to be reckoned with in the AFC.
