Coming into Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had already far exceeded expectations after losing superstar quarterback Tom Brady to retirement before the 2023 NFL season began.

Once Brady made it official that he wasn’t returning to the Buccaneers or signing with a new team in the league, Tampa Bay had the tall task of finding his successor under center, which obviously wouldn’t be easy.

However, the Buccaneers chose to take a chance on former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, who had his fair share of struggles after being traded by the Cleveland Browns.

After a better-than-expected stint with the Los Angeles Rams taking over for the injured Matthew Stafford, Mayfield signed with the Buccaneers and faced his fair share of adversity over the 2023 campaign on his way to a division title, a playoff win, and now a potential contract extension.

According to Skip Bayless of FOX Sports, Mayfield has earned a new deal with the Buccaneers, even though Tampa Bay fell short to Detroit in the playoffs.

During Sunday’s game against the Lions in the Divisional Round, Mayfield kept his team competitive, throwing for 349 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Although it wasn’t enough to get his team to advance to the NFC Championship Game to take on the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay has seen enough from Mayfield to make a decision on his future, which could be bright if the team keeps him on the roster for the foreseeable future.
