The Cincinnati Bengals suffered through a lost season this year, and all of a sudden, a team that was pegged as a Super Bowl contender a few months ago has a murky future.
Star wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are due for contract extensions, and while Chase will almost certainly get his bag, they may not be able to afford to give Higgins his bag.
As a result, some are wondering where Higgins could end up, and he himself said “It would be good going home” to the Tennessee Titans, whose new head coach is Brian Callahan, the Bengals’ offensive coordinator over the past five seasons, per The Sick Podcast.
Under Callahan, Cincinnati went to back-to-back AFC Championship Games and Super Bowl LVI, and this season, many felt the team would be there again until injuries destroyed their hopes.
Quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a calf strain during training camp that hampered him and resulted in some poor play from him and the team early in the season.
He started to hit his stride again at midseason, until a wrist injury in Week 11 prematurely ended his year.
Higgins himself was plagued by the injury bug, as he missed games due to a rib fracture and hamstring ailment, but he still managed to put up 656 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.
If he does leave, the Bengals will likely be at least somewhat diminished moving forward, but such is life in a league with a “hard” salary cap.
