If using this Georgia mustard BBQ sauce as a baste for grilled items like chicken breasts and pork chops, apply it during the last 15 minutes of cooking. We frequently use this must-have BBQ sauce for pulled pork and offer it on the side as a table sauce. That way, both you and your guests can add more if desired.

While you can use traditional American yellow mustard for this recipe, I recommend using good-quality German mustard instead. Another option is Dijon, which adds a spicy kick or a combination of yellow and Dijon mustards. Don’t be afraid to experiment with this Georgia mustard BBQ sauce! Adjust the sugar content to your liking and make it your own.

What is Georgia Mustard BBQ Sauce?

Georgia Mustard BBQ Sauce is a tangy and slightly sweet barbecue sauce featuring mustard as its main ingredient. Originating from South Carolina and introduced by German immigrants in the 18th century, it spread to neighboring states, including Georgia, where local variations were developed to suit regional tastes. This versatile sauce is commonly used as a marinade, basting sauce, or finishing sauce for grilled or smoked meats, especially pork and chicken, and can also be served as a dipping sauce or condiment.

Ingredients

  • Mustard (Yellow, Dijon, or German mustard)
  • Dark brown sugar (contains more molasses than light brown sugar, which is best for this recipe)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Unsalted butter
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Celery seed
  • Hot sauce (Tabasco, or something similar)

How to Make Georgia BBQ Sauce

  • Simmer all ingredients, except butter, in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Check on the BBQ sauce every few minutes and stir.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the two tablespoons of unsalted butter. Doing this will silken the sauce and pull all those delicious flavors together.
  • Use immediately, or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week after preparation.
