We first developed this grilled garlic cheese bread recipe for a Super Bowl party many years ago. Since then, we have enjoyed different variations of it, though, the original is still our favorite. The best part about this garlic bread is that it doesn’t require a lot of ingredients, and it can be made on the grill or in the oven.

Pair this amazing garlic cheese bread with pasta coated in our delectable Smoked Marinara Sauce for a satisfying, flavorful meal!

What bread is used for garlic bread?

Baguettes are commonly used to make garlic bread. However, you can also use a hearty sourdough like ciabatta.

How to Make Grilled Garlic Cheese Bread

  1. Preheat your grill for medium heat or 350 degrees F. If using a pellet grill, we recommend using mild fruitwood pellets for this recipe.
  2. Slice French bread loaf in half lengthwise.
  3. Combine butter mixture.
  4. Apply mixture: Using a large knife or spatula, spread half of the mixture on the cut side of each bread half.
  5. Foil boats: Tear off two 14′-16″ sheets of aluminum foil. Place one bread half, seasoned side up, onto the foil. Gather the ends of the foil to create a boat-like structure around the outer edges of the bread. Do not cover the top.
  6. Time to grill: Set each one onto the grill grates, close the lid, and let them cook for 7-10 minutes.
  7. Variation: If you’d like the bottom of the bread to have added crunch, gently remove bread from the foil and set directly onto the grates for 3 minutes.
  8. Remove from the grill, and place the grilled garlic cheese bread onto a clean cutting board. Let it stand for 5-7 minutes.
  9. Slice into desired portions and serve!
  10. Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator for 4-5 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or a 350-degree oven until warmed through.
  11. Serve grilled garlic cheese bread with smoked meats like brisket and pulled pork, Louisiana BBQ Shrimp, or cut into smaller pieces and serve as an appetizer.

Recipe Alternatives

  1. Use brie cheese for milder garlic bread. Simply slice the brie and add it on top of the butter mixture once applied to the bread.
  2. Make it spicy! Use pepper jack cheese or replace the green onions with sauteed or pickled jalapenos.
  3. Broil the garlic bread in your pellet grill or oven for a golden brown top. Remove the garlic cheese bread from the grill. Crank up the heat of your pellet grill as high as it will go. Once up to temp, place the bread back in (nestled on the foil so the bottom doesn’t burn) and broil for 2-3 minutes. The same can be done using your oven broiler.
