Popcorn on the Griddle (Blackstone Popcorn)

Skip the microwave popcorn for your next movie night and whip it up on your griddle instead!

We all know that homemade popcorn is much better than those microwave bags you can get at the store, but did you know you can whip it up on your griddle in about 10 minutes?

Plus, your backyard will smell like fresh popcorn, so don’t be surprised if you catch your neighbors peeking over the fence trying to get an invite to your movie night!

Popcorn on a griddle

Fresh popcorn on the griddle is a quick and easy way to add extra fun to your next movie night. You can get creative and add any flavor, but this recipe keeps it simple with a classic salty, buttery popcorn flavor.

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Popcorn kernels – any brand will work. I chose the Jumbo kernels from Pop-Secret because I like my popcorn big and fluffy!
  • Oil – you can use vegetable or canola oil for this recipe, but I grabbed a bottle of Popcorn oil from the grocery store. It has a delicious buttery flavor that is literally made for popcorn.
  • Seasoning – you can season your popcorn with whatever you like! I used popcorn butter salt for mine to keep it classic, but feel free to get creative with it.

Equipment you’ll need

  • Griddle/Blackstone – any griddle can be used for this recipe as long as it maintains a steady temperature. I used my Camp Chef GRIDIRON 36.
  • Griddle Dome – you need a dome to cover the popcorn while it’s popping. I used the Camp Chef melting dome, but if you don’t have a griddle dome a metal mixing bowl will work fine too.
  • Griddle Spatula – you need a long metal spatula to move the popcorn around and get it coated in the popcorn oil.

How to make popcorn on a griddle

1. Preheat your griddle

Preheat your griddle to medium-high heat, but only on half of the griddle. If you have a 4-burner griddle like mine, you want to turn on two burners. If yours is smaller, turn on half of the griddle.

If you have a small griddle with a single burner, you can still make popcorn. However, you must be ready to scoop it off the griddle top when it’s done, so keep those spatulas and a bowl handy!

Also, let the griddle fully preheat before adding your oil or popcorn. Popcorn cooks quickly, but if the griddle isn’t fully hot before you add it, the kernels will not pop and possibly burn.

2. Pop

Once your griddle is preheated, simply add the oil or popcorn oil to the griddle surface and spread it around with your spatula. You can add the kernels right on top.

Take your spatula and move the kernels around so each one is coated in oil.

Add a griddle dome (or large metal mixing bowl) on top of the popcorn and listen for it to start popping.

Once you hear the first few kernels pop, you can start moving the dome around and shaking the kernels during the cooking process. You want to keep them moving the whole time so that the kernels cook evenly and you don’t burn any of your popcorn.

One tip I can offer is to NOT open the dome during the cooking process. I made this mistake my first time, and popcorn flew everywhere. I got hit in the face and in the eye, and half my popcorn ended up on my deck (which my dogs loved, but I did not).

Once you notice that you can only hear kernels popping every 1-2 seconds, you can use the dome to shift the popcorn to the cool side of your griddle. Let it sit for about 30-60 seconds on the cool side before you open up the dome.

3. Season

You can use just a bit of salt or throw on your favorite barbecue seasoning. Anything you want to season it with should work great.

Just sprinkle the seasoning all over the popcorn and give it a good mix with your spatula.
