It is a brave new world for the New England Patriots now that Bill Belichick has left after 24 years of being their head coach and Jerod Mayo has replaced him.
They will have the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft, which could yield a potential franchise quarterback, should they keep it and use it on a quarterback.
However, Mayo hasn’t yet conducted certain offseason activities, including offseason workouts, despite the draft and OTAs nearing, which led former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson to blast Mayo via NBC Sports Boston.
“You don’t want to give the perception at all that you are behind or you’re not ready for this endeavor,” he said.
New England is starting over on the ground level, and with a young, rebuilding team such as this one, it is important to start preparing for the new season as early as possible.
They don’t have the luxury of a veteran core that has been together for a while and has won multiple Super Bowl championships together, which gives such a core some built-in chemistry.
These new generic Patriots have many needs other than the QB spot, including playmakers at wide receiver, help on their offensive line, and an edge rusher.
There is some speculation that as a result, they could trade down in the draft in order to obtain an extra pick or two and try to fill more needs at once.
The Patriots went 4-13 in 2023, which was their worst finish since 1992, the year before QB Drew Bledsoe arrived and started making them into a winning franchise.
There’s no telling how long it will take them to become a winner once again.
