Over the course of the 2023 NFL regular season, the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs were heavily criticized for the team’s inability to be a force to be reckoned with in the passing game due to their lack of talent at the wide receiver position.
At one point during the season, it seemed like the absence of superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill had finally caught up with the Chiefs because the lack of talent at wide receiver was so painfully obvious.
One player the Chiefs were hoping would step up this season at wide receiver was Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but he never really got going, finishing the regular season with only 21 receptions for 315 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Fortunately for Kansas City, the NFL playoffs have been a different story for Valdes-Scantling, with the 29-year-old wideout already racking up 108 yards on five receptions, with some of those catches being game-changers.
Head coach Andy Reid made it clear that he’s proud of Valdes-Scantling for what he’s been able to overcome this season in terms of not losing his confidence.
“So, I’m happy for him most of all and that he was able to recover, or whatever you want to say, from what was going on earlier,” Reid said, via ProFootballTalk.
Although Valdes-Scantling hasn’t put up monster numbers in the postseason, he has come up big in critical moments, which will help superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes lean on him during the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.
Even though the Chiefs are currently the underdog against Brock Purdy and company, Kansas City can’t be ruled out with the team’s resiliency getting them this far and within reach of winning a third Super Bowl title under Reid.
