The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to go from a great team to a dynastic one by defeating the ultra-talented San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
The Chiefs are the defending world champs, and Sunday’s big game will be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV when they overcame a late 10-point deficit against the 49ers to win their first ring of the Patrick Mahomes era.
One thing that makes San Francisco different is their front four, which consists of multiple players who can execute blitzes and pressure opposing quarterbacks.
Therefore, Kansas City’s offensive line will need to get the job done, and the team believes star left guard Joe Thuney has a “shot” at taking the field on Sunday, per James Palmer.
Thuney was named to his second Pro Bowl this season while earning his first All-Pro First-Team nod.
Having him in uniform would help keep players such as Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave, both of whom also made the Pro Bowl this year, away from Mahomes.
Mahomes had a down year statistically, partly because Kansas City’s wide receivers this year have been young and unproven, but it seems like as time has gone on, he has figured out how to make things work without Tyreek Hill or JuJu Smith-Schuster.
He raised eyebrows by taking the team all the way last season after Hill was traded, but Smith-Schuster played a large role in that success, and he left last offseason to join the New England Patriots.
Getting another Vince Lombardi Trophy this weekend without either Hill or Smith-Schuster would elevate Mahomes’ legacy even more and perhaps make him one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
