After yet another early playoff exit this season, the Dallas Cowboys have a lot of soul-searching to do this offseason.
They possessed one of the NFL’s best and most star-studded rosters this season, yet despite all the talent they have had lately, they haven’t gotten to the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 campaign.
Plenty of fans have called for head coach Mike McCarthy to be fired, but owner Jerry Jones defended McCarthy, and per Michael Gehlken, he used a basketball metaphor by saying that thanks to McCarthy, the team has been “hanging around the rim.”
For the third straight year, Dallas won 12 regular-season games, and at times, they looked dominant.
However, they had a couple of troubling losses during the regular season — they were blown out by the eventual NFC champion San Francisco 49ers in Week 5, and they also dropped games to the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills.
Even more troubling was a Week 3 loss to the hapless Arizona Cardinals, who were without quarterback Kyler Murray at the time.
While some predicted a loss for the Cowboys in the Wild Card round of the playoffs after they secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC, things turned out worse than most expected, as they fell behind 27-0 to Jordan Love and crew and never recovered.
The Cowboys are one of a handful of teams in pro sports who, because of their current talent and past history, can only consider a season a success if it ends with a world championship, and right now, it’s hard to imagine them winning one anytime soon.
