As arguably the greatest wide receiver in the history of the NFL, former San Francisco 49ers superstar Jerry Rice saw his fair share of defensive backs that wanted to contain him while he was on the football field during his incredible playing career.
Now that Rice is enjoying retirement and seems to have a firm grip on the distinction as the NFL’s greatest wideout of all time, he frequently gets asked questions about the past, present, and future when it comes to other great players he played against or has watched in today’s game.
During the NFC Championship Game last Sunday, Rice was in attendance at Levi’s Stadium when his former team defeated the Detroit Lions in a come-from-behind win to advance to the Super Bowl to face the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs.
While watching the game, Rice was accompanied by former NBA star Jalen Rose, who took the opportunity to ask the legendary wide receiver who were the five toughest defensive backs he faced during his career.
Rice, who clearly wasn’t expecting the question from Rose, could only name four players that made him work that much harder on the football field.
The three-time Super Bowl champion went on to name Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, Charles Woodson, and Rod Woodson.
All four of these defensive backs were elite during their primes in the NFL and drove a lot of wide receivers crazy with their coverage during games.
Battles between Sanders and Rice were especially legendary, with neither Hall of Famer wanting to give up an inch.
