Just about everyone expects University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams to be the first player chosen in the NFL Draft when it takes place in less than three months.
In his last two seasons with the Trojans, he has thrown for 72 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions while adding 21 touchdowns on the ground, and many feel he has the potential to become a true franchise QB.
However, there are some questions about his intangibles, and there are also reports that he doesn’t want to play for the Chicago Bears, who have the No. 1 pick in the draft.
But Lincoln Riley, the head coach of the Trojans, said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that winning is priority No. 1 for Williams.
“He wants to win. It’s less about location and it’s more about getting in the right situation where he knows he can continue to develop and help a franchise be successful,” Riley said.
Many scouts love Williams’ ability to ad-lib and make something out of nothing, almost at a Patrick Mahomes-type level, but there are concerns about him opting for the spectacular long-range pass over the simple, higher-percentage pass that would travel fewer yards.
The Bears had the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, but they opted to trade it to the Carolina Panthers for wide receiver D.J. Moore and a few future draft picks.
One of those picks they received turned out to be the No. 1 selection this year.
Everyone is wondering if Chicago will keep it, use it to trade down by a position or two, or even trade it and not receive another high pick this year and continue to roll with Justin Fields under center.
