Sean Payton Compares His QB Room To ‘Orphan Dogs’

After two forgettable seasons with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson under center, the Denver Broncos decided to release the one-time Super Bowl champion, which resulted in him eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers for another fresh start.

With Wilson moving on, the Broncos seemed to be leaning toward Jarrett Stidham as the new starter, but then speculation and rumors started to swirl about Denver potentially taking a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Ultimately, the Broncos decided that was the right move, with Bo Nix out of the University of Oregon falling to them and the team believing it was the right move to bring him in.

Along with adding Nix to the quarterback room in Denver, the Broncos also traded for Zach Wilson, formerly of the New York Jets, which seemed to complicate the situation a bit.

However, head coach Sean Payton seems to love what he’s seeing from his three quarterbacks thus far in OTAs, as he referred to them as “orphaned dogs” that make up a good quarterback room via KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM.

“It’s kind of the orphan group,” Payton said. “They’re all orphaned dogs. They’ve come from somewhere, but they’re doing good, and it’s a good room.”

As of right now, the Broncos have three quarterbacks capable of starting in Denver, but the consensus is that Nix will be the Week 1 starter.

However, in the NFL, anything can happen in these kinds of situations, which will make training camp quite interesting in Denver this year before the 2024 campaign gets underway in September.
